Samsonite’s new ‘functional’ collection is much cheaper on Amazon

It’s fair to say that good luggage really stands out from cheaper stuff when you start to use it. From sturdier compartments to way better wheels, spending a little more on your suitcases can be a game-changer for frequent travellers.

Samsonite is one of the bigger names in this market, of course, and one of its more recent collections is the Intuo lineup of sleek suitcases. Right now, despite being fairly new designs, you can pick them up heavily discounted on Amazon. The showpiece example is the Intuo Spinner S, which is reduced, making it just £165.75 right now.

It’s a really attractive four-wheel suitcase that can fit into the hand luggage requirements of many airlines – but it’s also expandable, making it super useful. It’s also in a lovely olive green colour that will help it stand out on a luggage carousel, without being garish.

The case has a TSA-compliant combination lock, which is a brilliant way to make sure that your belongings are secure while you’re in transit, without having to fiddle around with padlocks or wrapping up your case in plastic. Its internal compartments are also really smart – one half is fully zippered and contained, while the other has straps you can tighten to keep everything in place. A sturdy handle, meanwhile, means it’ll be easy to wheel around.

It can also be picked up in larger sizes and in other colours, with suitcase options large enough to cater to families or longer trips. The discounts on each of these sizes and colours do vary somewhat, though, so be sure to check them out before adding them to your basket.

From some early customer reviews it has a five-star average rating, showing that basically everyone who’s bought it and left a review has been thrilled. One of these happy customers said: “Lightweight, sturdy, easy to handle, accurate workmanship, interesting possibility to enlarge the size with a zipper, suitable for returning from travelling, highly recommended.” That’s comprehensive, while another called the suitcase: “Lightweight and functional”, which is all you could really want from it. A third customer wrote: “Very good product in line with our expectations.” That’s similarly reassuring.

As there are only 11 reviews so far, it’s hard to get a sense of what a broad range of people think of the suitcase. A lot more people have tried out the Samsonite S’Cure, which has 15,304 ratings on Amazon, averaging 4.5 stars. While you can’t do a like-for-like comparison, it’s useful to see what some of critics thought. One wrote that it “needs a firmer shell”, which might depend on what you’re used to, while another complained: “There are no instructions in how to set the combination lock.”

Heading to Samsonite’s store directly, alternatives like the Restackd Spinner Expandable 55cm for £255 show just how solid the value offered by the Intuo Spinner is. For something even more affordable, though, you can still go for a big brand; American Tourister has the Air Move 55cm Cabin bag for £115, for example, with some pretty similar features to Samsonite’s case.
