Check your change for two rare £2 coins – with one design worth £1k

Checked your coin collection recently?

It’s no secret certain coins can be worth a staggering fee – if you’re lucky. Just recently, a rare old penny was believed to be worth £200,000, if you own a certain detail.

Typically, coins that bear minting errors or are less common in circulation are highly sought after by collectors. A TikTok sensation, @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts a following of 203,000, recently enlightened his audience about two specific £2 coins.

In his latest video, he said: “Can you see any rare £2 coins with those interesting designs on them? You’ll be surprised to know that some are very valuable. Here’s some to look for…”

He then delves into the details of the 2014 Lord Kitchener £2 coin, issued to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

He said: “This coin launched to mark the centenary of the First World War, the error version is missing the words £2 from the heads side. The coin was launched nine years ago to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.

“It features an image of Lord Kitchener, a significant British military figure featured on wartime recruitment posters. It’s the variant without the ‘£2’ inscription that could rake in over £1,000.”

Lastly, he touches upon the 2016 Shakespeare – Tragedies coin. He claimed: “The writing on the edge of this coin from 2014 should read ‘what a piece of work is a man’.

“Tragedies error coins have the wrong inscription for king and country from the 2016 army First World War Centenary £2 coin. This normally sells for around £30 plus, a lovely error coin to find.”

Despite its modest value, it’s still worth 15 times its face value. The video has since received nearly 200 likes, with many viewers rushing to comment they own one of these coins.

One person wrote: “How cool would it be to come across Kitchener error.”

Another chimed in: “Yes I have this.”
