Netflix is now streaming a thrilling blockbuster sequel from 2024 and it’s already nabbed the number two spot on the platform’s top 10 film chart.
This action-packed supernatural comedy is stacked with an all-star cast, including plenty of familiar faces from the original 1984 film.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire wasn’t a major hit with critics, as it currently stands at a 42 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, but die-hard fans of the franchise have been raving about it.
When it comes to the audience, a far more encouraging 81 percent of viewers loved the film, with many calling it the best entry in the franchise since the original.
Plus, it’s clearly struck a chord with Netflix subscribers as, almost two years since its original cinema release, it has flown past other popular releases such as Wake Up Dead Man, Goodbye June and K-Pop Demon Hunters.
Following the success of the 2021 revival, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, ghostbusting family Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon and McKenna Grace are back for another madcap supernatural adventure, this time returning to the series’ roots in New York City.
When a ghostly force is once again unleashed onto the streets, the new team gives Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts a call to help them vanquish their latest foe.
One RT user raved in a five-star review: “Best film of the franchise! The animation on the Ghosts are excellent, the story feels original, the return of some familiar faces makes this so nostalgic, the comedy is excellent and Paul Rudd is amazing. Seriously, you can skip Afterlife and jump right to this one.”
Someone else agreed: “I thought it was a lot of fun. Most original movie of the franchise since the first. Has a The Real Ghostbusters feel.”
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire might have been my favorite in the series,” a third fan said.
“It was goofy, action packed fun with a creepy villain, a lot of characters, and Easter eggs from previous films.”
The praise continued on Letterboxd where one user wrote: “l really don’t say this lightly, but this was honestly one of the best movie-going experiences I’ve had in a long, LONG time.
“This movie is so much freer than the first, which in hindsight is exactly what it needed. It still doesn’t take itself too seriously and gives itself as much room to play around as it needs. I truly, truly never knew what to expect.”
And a final fan declared: “I have real evidence that ghostbusters: frozen empire is one of the best films of the franchise.
“The ending was such a beautiful and heartfelt homage to the 1984 film. I teared up.
“There was something so comforting about Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd back as ghostbusters but so it was crestfallen that Harold Ramis was not (for obvious reasons, just like in the previous film).
“Also, this was the happiest Bill Murray I’ve seen in years and years! The man was really happy to be there and I don’t think it was solely for the money. truly felt he was a ghostbuster for real.”
